Selling Graphic Novels in Comic Shops
Local creator shelves, consignment and signings.
October 17, 2026 · 1 min read
Comic shops are where many dedicated comic readers buy their books — and a local comic shop that champions your work can be a great ally. Getting in works a little differently from bookstores.
How comic shops buy
Comic shops traditionally order through specialist distributors serving the comics market, as well as through book distributors for graphic novels. Distribution in the comics world has changed a lot in recent years, so ask shop owners directly how they prefer to order independent graphic novels — the answer varies from shop to shop.
Local creator shelves
Many comic shops have a "local creators" section and accept books on consignment: you bring copies, they sell them, and you share the price. It's often the easiest way in. Agree on the split and terms in writing.
Know the shop
Comic shops differ. Some focus on superheroes, others on manga, all-ages books, or literary graphic novels. A shop with a strong kids' and all-ages section is a natural fit for classic adaptations. Visit as a customer first and see what they stock.
Pitch simply
Bring a finished copy and a short sell sheet: cover, a two-line description, age range, price, page count, ISBN, and how to order. Make it easy for a busy owner to say yes.
Events
Comic shops host signings, launch parties, and special events. Offer a signing for your launch or a drawing demo on a busy weekend — and promote it to your own followers so you bring customers into the shop.
Support the shop
Mention the shop on social media, send readers there, and buy from them. Shops remember creators who help them sell.
