KDP Select and Kindle Unlimited for Graphic Novels

Is ebook exclusivity right for your book?

October 14, 2026 · 1 min read

When you publish a Kindle ebook, KDP asks whether you want to enroll it in KDP Select. It's an important decision, especially for graphic novels. Here's what it means.

Check KDP's current terms before enrolling — details change.

What KDP Select is

KDP Select is an optional program for ebooks. In exchange for making the ebook exclusive to Amazon for a 90-day term, you get:

  • Kindle Unlimited (KU). Subscribers can read your book as part of their subscription. You're paid from a shared fund based on pages read.
  • Promotional tools, such as limited-time free days or discounted "Countdown Deals."

Exclusivity applies only to the ebook. Your paperback and hardcover can still be sold anywhere.

Why it can suit graphic novels

  • Readers try more. KU subscribers can read a new author's book without paying extra, which lowers the barrier for an unknown series.
  • Series benefit. Readers who enjoy book one in KU often continue straight to book two.
  • Simple. One store to manage for the ebook.

Why it might not

  • No other ebook stores. While enrolled, you can't sell that ebook on Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play, or through library ebook services.
  • Page-read payments vary. The amount per page changes month to month.
  • Picture books and comics behave differently. How pages are counted for highly visual, fixed-layout books can differ from prose. See how your own book reports in your dashboard before relying on it.

A practical approach

  1. Enroll one ebook for a single 90-day term as an experiment.
  2. Watch sales, pages read, and whether readers move on to your other books.
  3. At the end of the term, decide whether to renew or go "wide" to other stores.

Whatever you choose for the ebook, your print editions — the main format for most graphic novels — aren't affected. For print pricing, see our pricing guide.
